The Regional District Central Okanagan Board will have a new chairperson at its next meeting.

At the conclusion of the April 26 meeting, current chair Loyal Wooldridge announced his voluntary resignation.

Wooldridge, who also serves as a Kelowna city councillor, expressed gratitude for the opportunity.

“It’s been a pleasure and an honour to serve as the chair for the past three years.”

Citing transparency and integrity, Wooldridge said his decision to step down is related to his pursuit of provincial politics to be the NDP candidate for the new Kelowna-Centre riding.

He pointed out the board has navigated through adversity and crises, including the McDougall Creek Wildfire while ensuring a unified voice for the region.

City of West Kelowna Director Stephen Johnston has also resigned, as he is the BC Conservative candidate for West Kelowna-Peachland in the upcoming provincial election.

Several directors expressed appreciation for Wooldridge and Johnston’s service.

“You guys are courageous leaders for your communities. I’ve always appreciated your support,” said Westbank First Nation director Jordan Coble.

Wooldridge will step aside before the May 22 board meeting when either Vice-Chair, Okanagan East director Kevin Kraft will take over, or a new chair will be elected.

Wooldridge will stay on as a director for the City of Kelowna.
